The most serious danger comes from Candida auris. The yeast-like fungus, discovered in 2009 in Japan, can cause blood infections in humans.
It is noted that scientists became seriously interested in it only 5 years after its identification. At that time, it had already become widespread in India, South Africa and America.
Until the pathogen penetrates into the blood, it can live on the skin and be transmitted between people. The fungus poses the greatest threat to immunocompromised individuals, and it shows resistance to modern medications.
According to experts, in 2022, 2,377 Americans were affected by the fungus. Another 5754 people were carriers, but at the same time symptoms were not noted in them. Lethality was 30-60 percent, experts report, noting that most of the deceased patients still had comorbidities.
